The difference between gate valves and globe valves
Date:2026-05-23 12:00:00 Author:浙江良航管阀科技有限公司

1. Different structures

The valve core of a gate valve is a gate plate (flat plate or wedge-shaped), and its movement mode is up and down, like lifting a sluice gate. The gate plate moves perpendicularly to the direction of the medium flow.

The valve core of a stop valve is a valve disc (circular disc-shaped), and its movement mode is front and back pushing and pulling, moving along the axis of the valve seat. It is like a piston.

2. Different flow paths

When the gate valve is fully open, the flow path is straight-through, and the medium can pass through without any obstruction. Therefore, the flow resistance is extremely small.

The flow path of the stop valve is S-shaped bent, and the medium must bend around to pass through. Therefore, the flow resistance is relatively large. Even when fully open, there is still some pressure loss.

3. Different sealing properties

The sealing property of the gate valve is generally poor, and it is not suitable for precise flow regulation because the gate plate is prone to be eroded by the medium when partially open or closed.

The sealing property of the stop valve is excellent, and it can precisely regulate the flow. The opening degree of the valve disc has a good correspondence with the flow, so it is very suitable for throttling use.

4. Different installation directions

Gate valves have no installation direction requirements. The medium can flow from either side in any direction.

Stop valves have strict installation direction requirements. They must be "low in and high out" (the medium enters from below the valve disc and flows out from above). Otherwise, the closure will not be tight, and the operation will be laborious.

5. Different application scenarios

Gate valves are suitable for use as a complete cut-off device, such as the opening and closing of main pipelines, and are not suitable for use as a regulating valve. They are commonly found in water supply pipelines, steam pipelines, and other occasions requiring large flow and low resistance.

Stop valves are suitable for use as a regulating and throttling device, and can also be used for cutting off. They are commonly found in small-diameter pipelines that require flow regulation, such as heating pipelines and instrument pipelines.

Please provide a one-sentence summary.

Gate valve = On-off switch (it works best when fully open); Globe valve = Control water faucet (can adjust the flow at any time)
